San Marcos Online - The City of San Marcos

The City of San Marcos, CA is located in the hills of North County San Diego inbetween I-15 and I-5, along the 78 freeway. San Marcos is well known for California State University, San Marcos, a state University that was founded about 15 years ago, as well as Palomar College. A total of about 32,000 students attend Palomar College and CSU San Marcos with a projected number of 25,000 once CSUSM is at capacity. With that many young college students many new bars and nightclubs have opened in this city to support the new population of students.

Apart from that, San Marcos is home to Old California Restaurant Row with some of the finest restaurants in San Diego County. The population of San Marcos was prodomitaly retirees and Hispanic, but a large influx of white middle class citizens as well as students of all ethnicities and backgrounds has made San Marcos one of the fastest growing cities in San Diego County with an estimated population of 90,000 by 2015.

The City of San Marcos, CA was founded in the 1880's and stayed relatively small for nearly a century. By the mid 1900's San Marcos saw the construction of highway 78 causing San Marcos to become the third fastest growing city a short time later. During the 1960's the population of San Marcos, CA grew by the thousands and the City of San Marcos was incorporated.

Since the 1980's San Marcos has remained one of the fastest growing cities in California and has enjoyed the addition of several large retailers as well as Palomar College and Cal State San Marcos.
